Welcome to
Haight-Ashbury
Affectionately known as "The Haight" to its residents, Haight-Ashbury is known for its vibrant history and retains a lingering essence of the flower power movement that prevailed in the 1960s. However, in addition to this countercultural legacy, the area is home to an array of fashionable stores, premium secondhand shops, trendy restaurants, as well as a thriving street art scene. The Haight-Ashbury district was initially considered uninhabitable, but after San Francisco became a seaport of brick and stone, it began to attract ranchers who raised livestock to feed the city. With the establishment of Golden Gate Park in 1868, the Haight became a popular destination for San Franciscans seeking recreational opportunities. During that time in the late 1800s, an amusement park was built at the intersection of Haight and Clayton streets, which featured caged lions, a waterslide, vaudeville, and a miniature railroad! As the popularity of the Golden Gate Park grew, so did the demand for housing in the area, which led to the development of the Haight-Ashbury as a desirable suburb for the upper and middle classes. In the 1950s and 1960s, Haight-Ashbury became a hub for counterculture and the hippie movement. The area was characterized by a proliferation of alternative lifestyles, music and drug use. Haight-Ashbury was home to many influential figures of the time, including musicians, poets, and activists.
