The Marina
With pictorial views along the edge of the Bay, the Marina attracts shoppers and foodies to congregate on its boutique-lined streets and extensive green spaces. The Marina was created from filled tidelands and a shallow cove that used to house a coal-gasification plant, roadhouses, shooting ranges, and even a pleasure resort called Harbor View Park. It was transformed in 1915 when the Panama Pacific International Exposition “World's Fair” was held and the land was filled in and smoothed out. Since the 1920s, the Marina has been home to single-family houses, apartment buildings, markets, restaurants, bars, and legacy businesses, reflecting popular styles of the time. The district is now an attractive neighborhood for young professionals and boasts recreational sites, open space, and incredible views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge.
